#236 Leonard Nimoy: "Secret Selves"

Where: 1040 MASS MoCA WAY    NORTH ADAMS, MA 01247
When: Aug 1, 2010–Jan 2, 2011

Artist/actor Leonard Nimoy will exhibit his recent photographic series that explores the lost or hidden self.

Inspired by Aristophanes' theory that humans were once double-sided creatures with two heads and multiple limbs before Zeus cleaved man in two and left him forever struggling to be whole again, Nimoy's photographs reveal his subjects' other half. Shooting in nearby Northampton, Massachusetts, Nimoy recruited volunteers from the local community with an open call for portrait models willing to be photographed posed and dressed as their true or imagined "secret selves." From the popular rock star and superman to the more unexpected dog lover and Pan, these various secret identities (off-line avatars as they might be described) offer an intimate, sometimes humorous, and often profound new look at the residents of Northampton and the inner yearnings and fantasies that we all share.

Accompanying the large, life-size photographs is a video documenting the artist's conversations with his subjects and the poignant, personal moments he masterfully elicits from his unlikely muses.

#228 237th Anniversary Boston Tea Party Annual Reenactment (Sunday)

Posted by Tara Peterson on Fri, Dec 10, 2010

s TALLL SHIP large
The Old South Meeting House, 310 Washington Street will be presenting the 237th anniversary reenactment of the Boston Tea Party. For more information and tickets click here.
By December 16, 1773, all the fuss about tea in Boston had come to a boil. Three ships loaded with tea sat anchored in Boston harbor. The Patriots were determined to prevent the tea on these ships from being landed on American soil, because if it were, a tax would be due upon it.

This is where you join the party! Come take on the role of Patriot or Loyalist in this spirited reenactment of the Boston Tea Party. Hear from the likes of John Hancock, the richest man in Boston; Francis Rotch, owner of the ship Dartmouth; famed orator and doctor Joseph Warren; and notorious rabble rouser Samuel Adams.  Then, witness firsthand the event that John Adams said “is so bold, so daring, so intrepid and so inflexible, … that I can’t but consider it an epoch in history.”

12/12 at 5:30 and 7pm at $9. Space is limited and this event does sell out. Please purchase your tickets today!
