Posted by Hillary Waldron on Fri, May 17, 2013

Boston Pops"Two of Boston's iconic cultural institutions – the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and the Boston Pops – will come together at Symphony Hall to honor President Kennedy and the 1960's era of American culture. The evening will evoke the 1960s 'Mad Men' era, with a special musical performance featuring excerpts of President Kennedy's most memorable speeches narrated by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.

Song stylist Steve Lippia, whom Keith Lockhart has called, 'the absolute vocal reincarnation of the Sinatra sound,' will step into the limelight, to perform the smoky standards that define the chic sounds of the '60's. Lockhart, Lippia, and the Boston Pops will perform everything ranging from this era's lounge Latin to the tunes of the British Invasion, as well as such classic songs as 'Fly Me to the Moon,' 'Mack the Knife,' and 'The Best is Yet to Come'.

Bronwyn to bring Eastern European flare to Cambridge

Posted by Hillary Waldron on Tue, May 14, 2013

bronwynUnion Square in Somerville is known for its bars, eateries and history. That's why Bronwyn will be a wonderful addition to this neighbhorhood's already happening environment.

Bronwyn's atmosphere is comfortable and contemporary. The owners, a husband and wife duo, plan to "pay homage to their German roots by serving food and drink inspired from the region" which will  include Bavarian sausages, riesling sauerkraut, pretzels and foie gras.

"This new spot has the potential of joining the already flourishing nightlife scene of Union Square. It plans to offer Eastern and Central European beers, but local beer fans don't fret -- American beers that are brewed in the European style will also be available. Craft cocktails, wines from central Europe, and schnapps will also make up the drink menu."

While Bronwyn opens May 15, you can start making reservations on May 11.

Michelangelo At The MFA

Posted by Hillary Waldron on Mon, May 13, 2013

Michelangelo"From now 'til June 30, Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Master Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti will be on display at the Museum of Fine Arts.

The collection features a rich and varied selection of 26 works from the master’s collection, preserved in the artist's family home, the Casa Buonarroti, in Florence

The exhibition includes many of Michelangelo’s (1475–1564) great renowned drawings, which illustrate how he alternated between interpretations of the divine and the worldly, or profane, throughout his career.

His powers to evoke the sacred are fully displayed in his large drawing of the Virgin and Child—one of his most admired images. A worldlier image is the imaginary portrait of Cleopatra, a black chalk presentation drawing he made as a gift for his friend Tommaso de' Cavalieri that is considered one of the Renaissance genius’s most poetic conceptions. The works selected for “Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane” will be divided between figure and architectural studies and include several major sheets never previously exhibited in the US. Barry McGee Exhibit at the ICA

Posted by Hillary Waldron on Thu, May 09, 2013

barryBarry McGee's Exhibit will be appearing at Boston's ICA until September 2, 2013.

Barry McGee started exhibiting his inspiration art on the streets of San Francisco in the late 1980s. His inspiration came from the economic and social environment which was filled with uncertainty and a hard core music culture.

"McGee developed as a graffiti artist, often under the tag name 'Twist'. Deploying a visual vocabulary that borrows elements from graffiti, comics, hobo art, sign painting, and other sources, McGee’s imagery simultaneously celebrates and critiques his diverse Mission District neighborhood.

At once humorous, political, and difficult, his art underscores the complexities of life in early twenty-first-century America, a country in the midst of wars, a financial crisis, unemployment, class stratification, and the ever-cheerful exhortation to keep consuming. Unwilling to simply reflect existing conditions, McGee’s work proposes an alternate reality of political provocation, cooperative survival, and creative exuberance. "
