#720 Boston Restaurant Week

Posted by Tara Peterson on Sun, Mar 18, 2012

"Restaurant Week finally kicks off today, and the whole city of Boston becomes your oyster! No longer must you scrimp and save to get a piece of the burgeoning restaurant scene in our fair city, because for this one week, you get to pretend that the five-star meal in front of you is normal, everyday grub. Choose from 220 temples of haute cuisine, and take advantage of prix fixe three-course dinner, three-course lunch, and two-course lunch menus at reduced prices. And remember, it’s the food that’s discounted, so try not to be that person who leaves a dismal tip and floats out of the room on a cloud of food coma euphoria. Seriously, don’t. At locations throughout Boston [check website for participating locations]."

#719 St. Patty's at Irish Village

Posted by Tara Peterson on Sat, Mar 17, 2012

"Know what’s better than a corned beef sandwich for St. Patrick’s Day? A free corned beef sandwich. Irish Village, a Brighton favorite since the 1970s, is offering the best way to surround yourself with the best of Ireland without having to go anywhere near the parade. Musician Finbar Doyle will be on hand with authentic pub songs and showmanship, and expert Guinness-pourer (if only we held a title like that) Kieran McWilliam works the tap pulls just for you. Well, you and however many of your friends you can cram in there."

#718 AD20/21

Posted by Tara Peterson on Fri, Mar 16, 2012

"In college, our walls were plastered with the usual pseudo-intellectual fare: Van Gogh prints for the romantics, Zeppelin for the throwbacks, Marley for the stoners, Godfather for the film buffs. We dragged these paper personas from dorm room to apartment, rolled and re-tacked them between summers, and, finally, when they were too tattered to hang (or we finally got better taste) we reluctantly recycled them. Good news for the nostalgic: you can pick yourself up some new, adult versions this weekend at the AD 20/21: Art & Design of the 20th & 21st Centuries & The Boston Print Fair, held together at the Cyclorama. Tonight, they’re holding a gala preview with food, wine, music and — of course — art."

Where: Boston Center for the Arts, Boston, MA | 539 Tremont Street
When: Friday, March 16, 1:30pm – Special Guest Speaker
Saturday, March 17, 3:00pm – Panel Discussion

#717 Masa's Salsa Thursdays

Posted by Tara Peterson on Thu, Mar 15, 2012

"First things first: say Masa's Salsa a few times. Good, right? Now onto business. Masa offers 50 cent tapas tonight, along with a free salsa lesson from 8-9pm (the dance, not the dip), and won't judge how many mojitos it takes you to bust out your signature Latin shimmy on the dance floor. 50 cent tapas, people! That's cheaper than a load of laundry!"

Where: Masa | 439 Tremont St, Boston, MA | South End
When: Tonight (dancing is at 8pm-9pm - not sure when those tapas start)
Price: 50 cent. (depends on if you have one tapa though, if you have two, obviously that's going to be a buck).

INSOMNAERIA

Boston, MA—Aerial dance company Bow & Sparrow announces it’s premiere Boston performance with Helos, an exhilarating blend of dance, circus and aerial arts. The performance will be a showcase of local circus artists and California-based company members and will feature gravity defying acrobatics, live music by Boston-based Wobblesauce, hand balancing, hooping, one of a kind aerial apparatus, and the rarely seen Cyr Wheel. This special one-day engagement will take place Friday, March 9, 8pm at the Arts at the Armory in Somerville.

Where: Arts at the Armory | 191 Highland Avenue, Somerville
When:  Friday, March 9, doors at 7:30pm, show at 8pm
Price: $25 (advance), $35 (door), general admission. Available through Brown Paper Tickets. For more information please visit www.bowandsparrow.org for info.

Helos also marks the company’s first production since it became bi-coastal with both Directors moving from their previous home base in San Francisco. Kate Law Hoflich recently moved to the Boston area (Needham), while Alayna Stroud made the move to LA to become a cast member of Cirque du Soleil’s Iris. This show will be a powerful blend of New England and California’s best circus artists and musicians.

The evening length show is filled with colorful and surreal costumes that conjure images of flight and birds. The movement hovers and floats, sometimes 25 feet off the stage, sometimes only inches above it, sometimes firmly planted yet still defying gravity. There will be live music before, during, and after the performance, beer, wine, and a lively, informal, party-like atmosphere will reign.

Featured performers include artistic directors Kate Law Hoflich and Alayna Stroud, along with T Lawrence-Simon, Gina De of Aerialicious Entertainment, Teresa Kochis of Overhead Arts, Ellen & Roger May of Off the Ground Circus, Morgan Oldham, Joanne Virginio, and Little L of Boston Hoop Troupe.
