#584 The BLUES at Cantab Lounge

Posted by Tara Peterson on Wed, Dec 07, 2011

cantab2

Get over this flipping humidity, or possibly get over hump day with some down to earth blues music and a good beer and make your way to Cantab Lounge.

Every Tuesday, (yes I know it's Wednesday, they have blues music ALL week - and I just copy and pasted this blurb) the best bluegrass pickers from near and far come together at the Cantab Lounge to sip Bourbon and jam in the spirit of Bill Monroe. But even though the Cantab is known for its open-mic nights, Tuesday remains an in-the-know thing. Before the feature band takes the stage at 10, musicians pick and strum together just about anywhere in the place they can find room. Not a bluegrass fanatic? Come with your mind and ears open and by the end of the night you’ll be enthusiastically throwing your cash into the donation hat. (There’s no cover charge.) Here’s a tip: Get there before 8 and snag a seat in front of the upstairs stage to avoid making friends with the back wall. If it’s still too crowded for you, there’s a full bar in the basement, complete with dusty bottles of liquor and barstools that look like they predate the bluegrass movement.

It's Wednesday, here is what is going down tonight....Wednesdays there's Candy's Blues, Jazz & Rock Jam Upstairs and a Poetry Slam downstairs in the Underground.

Directions: 738 Massachusetts Ave. Central Square | Cambrdige
Times:

Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Thursday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Sunday, noon to 1 a.m.

#581 Award-Winning British Commercials 2010 at the ICA

JohnSmiths Diner 2

I am a sucker for dry humor, and if you are the same, I TOTALLY suggest going to the ICA to watch Award-Winning British Commercials. (They never disappoint, and more than likely, you leave very happy).

Boston is one of just 10 cities in the US where you can see this annual showcase—now in its 33rd year—featuring winners of the British television Advertising Awards. Described as “bite-size films” or minute masterpieces” (The New York Times), these outstanding commercials in a range of categories offer a glimpse into the originality, wit, and creativity of British advertising.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. Get more information here.
