#638 Geckos: Tails to Toepads

Posted by Tara Peterson on Sat, Feb 04, 2012

green gecko

When I lived in Florida I had a Gecko run into my apartment, and went straight into the vents in the back of my TV. For all I know, that little bugger could be in there still. Anyhew...

The Museum of Science has a fun exhibit on Gecko's! Grab some friends and head over.

"Bulging eyes, night vision, sticky toepads, squawking voices, and disposable body parts. Sounds like the makings of a murder mystery, but it's a new exhibit at the Museum of Science. More than 60 lizards of the Gekkonidae family await your bulging eyes at "Geckos: Tails to Toepads."

Where:  Museum of Science | One Museum Of Science Driveway
When: Saturday, Feb 4 9:00a to 5:00p
Price: $10 to $18. (Just a guess on admission here).

#636 the Boston Marathon Has Its Own Museum???

Posted by Tara Peterson on Thu, Feb 02, 2012

1928
So I feel pretty lame and didn't realize there was a museum for the Boston Marathon? And why wouldn't their be?

"Tracing the colorful history of the race all the way back to the origins of long-distance running itself: the day the Greek Pheidippides purportedly ran from ancient Marathon to Athens to deliver the report, “Rejoice! We conquer,” and dropped dead. For its part, the Boston Marathon was run for the first time in 1897, a year after a contingent from the Boston Athletic Association returned from competing in the first modern Olympics, held in Greece. Of course, few modern sports require less equipment than marathon running, and the museum consists mostly of photographs, newspaper clippings, maps, T-shirts, trophies and running shoes. But what owners: Johnny Miles, Johnny Kelley, Bill Rodgers, Alberto Salazar, Joan Benoit Samuelson, and others. There is even a bronzed pair of Kelley’s Size 8 running shoes."

When: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

#633 American Master Prints 1900-1960

Posted by Tara Peterson on Mon, Jan 30, 2012

printexhibition
By 1900 printmaking as a fine art was firmly established in the United States. Often working as illustrators for newspapers, periodicals, and books, this generation of artists focused on recording the life around them. Included in the exhibition are John Sloan’s etchings depicting scenes of daily life in the neighborhoods of New York City and the contrasts he observed between the wealthy and the working class; and George Bellows’ images of the campaigns of the evangelist Billy Sunday, the rise of boxing, and the atrocities of World War I. The period between 1900 and 1960 was a time when a number of women artists gained prominence as printmaker, and works by Isabel Bishop, Kyra Markham, and Mabel Dwight illustrate the American experience as they saw it. The current exhibition represents only a fraction of the Library’s rich holdings in the area of American master prints of the first half of the 20th century.

Where: Wiggin Gallery | Central Library in Copley Square | 700 Boylston Street
