Take a tour through African American History in Boston

Posted by Katie Beth Clark on Tue, Oct 16, 2012

365 things to do in Boston African American historyAs the years go by - decades really - there are more and more generations that never truly lived and experienced the many struggles faced by African Americans. I am 23 years old, and ever since my first day of preschool I have viewed everyone as equal. My mom lived in Alabama and still tells me stories about the first day African Americans and Caucasians went to school together. Although my generation didn't live through it, I still think this is a great tour to take to help us understand where our country came from, and most important, where we are going.

"The African Meeting House and Abiel Smith School on Beacon Hill, both built in the early 1800's, are two of the Museum of African American History's most valuable assets. Located in what once was the heart of Boston's 19th-century African American community, these buildings remain a showcase of black community organization and enduring testimony to black craftsmanship."

The Black Heritage Freedom Tour in Beacon Hill needs to be your next on your list of things to do in Boston. It is a 1.6 mile walking tour with the largest collection of historic sites in the country relating to the life of a free African American community prior to the Civil War.

Guided tours available year around by appointment (617) 742-5415 and at 10, noon, and 2 pm Memorial Day through Labor Day. I copy and pasted these times so check out their website here and make sure to give them a call to find out more.

Mind Over Mind: The Surprising Power of Expectations, TONIGHT!

Posted by Katie Beth Clark on Mon, Oct 15, 2012

both 620x350Tonight at 6PM at Boston Public Library in Back Bay (700 Boylston Street) make some last minute plans to attend today's author talk series. Tonight Chris Berdik, author of Mind Over Mind: The Surprising Power of Expectations, will grace us with his presence and insight on his powerful thoughts regarding the power of our mind.

"Mind Over Mindexplores the frontiers of expectations research, revealing how our brains work in the future tense and how our assumptions—about the next few milliseconds or the next few years—bend reality. It shows how expectations can sometimes make us healthier, stronger, smarter, and more successful while other times leave us depressed and defeated."

There is always room for improvement when it comes to improving our way of life (especially if it's free), so it can't hurt to stop by for a quick hour to hear how this guy has changed the lives of many. I mean, what do we have to lose? ...besides the terrible rush hour aggravation you're going to run into going home at 6pm.

Who ya gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS!

Posted by Katie Beth Clark on Sun, Oct 14, 2012

365 thigns to do in boston ghost bustersWhen I heard the Ghost Busters were going to be in town, I couldn't help but share the news with all my peeps- aka you! I'm not sure if everyone has seen this movie as much as I have, but it is definitely an all-time favorite for many people. Watch the movie live at the Coolidge Corner Theater on October 22nd. If you haven't seen the Ghost Busters, then ummm... you haven't lived yet. It is an all-time classic. I may just be a little bit obsessed with movies, but trust me, this is one to see. Three scientists discover a way to kill ghosts but their funding is cut. Soon after they start a business - killing ghosts- an evil spirit Gozer becomes a major problem. I won't tell you too much, but keep in mind that Gozer is a 12-story tall marshmellow man. Scary, I know. (I would probably just eat him... just sayin.) So take a lazy day and make a date to watch the Ghost Busters.

Posted by Katie Beth Clark on Fri, Oct 12, 2012

Vanessa Trien and the Jumping Monkeys have been quite the buzz around town lately, and lucky for Boston they will be performing live at the Coolidge Corner Theater this Sunday October 14th. Vanessa is an amazing singer-songwriter who has an impressive way of entertaining children, and the parents as well. If you are looking for something to do with the kids this weekend (without boring yourself to death) I highly recommend checking out her show.

When I heard about these glass flowers at Harvard it was hard to imagine. Let me reassure you folks that this is no joke. Even in the cold of winter, a garden of flowers blooms in the ‘Glass Flowers’ gallery.

"This unique collection of over 3,000 models was created by glass artisans Leopold Blaschka and his son, Rudolph. The commission began in 1886, continued for five decades, and the collection represents more than 830 plant species."
