Take a night out in Jamaica Plain and go see America's oldest community theatre: The Footlight Club. The 2012-2013 season marks the incredible 136th year of this great organization. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat just wrapped up, and casting is set for January's show: Wait until Dark. I went to Joseph, and the venue is very cool historic old building called Eliot Hall. Take a weeeknd night and enjoy one of JP's great restaurants and then saunter on over to a performance by the talented actors and actresses of the Footlight Club....

As we approach the depths of winter, as the NHL slips deeper into its frozen labor dispute, and as the sports options start to dwindle down, I highly suggest going to see a college hockey game in our fair city. Boston is rich in tradition and history as far as hockey goes, and this is perhaps no more visible than at some of our Universities. Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern are all within the city limits, and offer some exciting and competitive Divi sion 1 College hockey (both men's and women's). BC and BU have won 4 of the past 5 Men's National Titles (3 for my alma mater BC of course!!!). The 2 powerhouse schools had 32 former players suit up in NHL last year. 

Factor in UMASS-Amherst, UMASS-Lowell, Merrimack, UNH, UVM, and Maine, and the Northeast is to College Hockey what the SEC is to College Football. Not to mention, college hockey is a great value, as most tickets are around $10....Some upcoming games are:

Santa got a lot of ink on our blog this week, so it's time we show some of that Holiday Spirit for the Jews. What better place to do so than at Chanukah In The City on Sunday December 9th at 10am at The Back Bay Events Center located at 200 Berkeley Street in Back Bay. Sing, dance, play, make crafts and eat latkes at this event designed for families with children under 7 years old (though all are welcome). The event is being presented by Combined Jewish Philanthropies. Mazel Tov!!!

Come participate or watch one of Boston's most unique and fun charity events on Saturday December 8th at 1pm in Back Bay at Lir Tavern on Boylston St.: The Annual Santa Speedo Run. This year's run will benefit the Play Ball Foundation. The run is +-1 mile down and back up Back Bay and is limited to 500 participants strutting a combination of skin, speedos and holiday themed accessories. As of today there are a limited number of spots still open to run. 

ICA Museum is a great way to spend a day checking out alternative, progressive artists (if you've had enough of renaissance paintings at the MFA). They have awesome displays and touring exhibitions from people like Anish Kapoor (the Bean in Chicago), etc. If it's nice out, you can take a walk around the harbor afterwards or go to one of the many new restaurants in the Waterfront neighborhood. Pick a pretty day with great Fall weather and take a trip to the ICA Museum!

Check out the schedule of shows at the Citi Emerson Colonial Theater, and make a date to go. This theatre is the oldest continuously operating theater in New England - it opened in December of 1900. This theatre is one of Boston's true historical , well-known, must-visit places. 

"In the early and mid 20th century, Boston was considered a launching pad for Broadway producers to try out new productions before bringing them to New York. Boston theatergoers were treated to a sneak peek of many well-known Broadway shows at the Colonial including Anything Goes, Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma!, Annie Get Your Gun, and La Cage aux Folles."

As of July 2012, Citi Performing Arts Center (nonprofit) has taken of the operations of the theatre, and have an agreement with Broadway In Boston to book shows. This will ensure that this Boston tradition is continued on and remains a historic home.

On December 12th at the Church of Boston at 69 Kilmarnock Street near Fenway, embrace the spirit of giving. Blackout Entertainment is presenting their first ever annual "secret santa" hip hop charity show. Enjoy live entertainment, drinks, and music, all while giving back to the community you live in. All of the money raised will be directly donated to Boston families in need this holiday.
