#114 Celtic Night with Laura Cortese

Posted by Tara Peterson on Tue, Aug 17, 2010

LauraCortese During the summer, there are free concerts at City Hall Plaza, and along the waterfront at Christopher Columbus Park.

Christopher Columbus Park is holding their Waterfront Arts Series. Tonight the artist "could" possibly be "Celtic Night with Laura Cortese"

A little about Laura Cortese:
Welding the propulsive grace of ancient fiddle styles to disarmingly open-hearted original pop songs, Laura Cortese has emerged among the most intriguing and versatile, musicians in the bountiful New England post-folk scene. At home in any number of traditional styles, her highly-visible work as a supporting musician (on fiddle, vocals, and bass) includes appearances with Uncle Earl, Tao Rodriguez Seeger, Band of Horses, and - as part of Pete Seeger's 90th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden - Patterson Hood and Michael Franti.

Tonight starting at 6pm-8pm (FREE performance)

Inside the Mind of M.C. Escher

Posted by Tara Peterson on Mon, Aug 16, 2010

MC EscherI've always been amazed with Escher's work. Trying to draw it when I was kid...needless to say, they never turned out how I wanted, but I made it my own. The Museum of Science is running an exhibit with hands-on activities, that invite visitors to explore some of the optical phenomena that so fascinated Escher, such as tessellations and sphere reflections. These repeating patterns are classic Escher — as is his self-portrait in a reflecting sphere, which he drew at various points in his life. After you see Escher's 1935 "Hand with Reflecting Sphere," you'll have the opportunity to try it yourself.

We suggest you check it out. The exhibit runs until January 1st...so you have sometime, but we all know, that time sneaks up on us.

For more information visit Escher's page on the Museum of Science. There is time information and ticket prices as well.

#112 The Breakfast Club

Posted by Tara Peterson on Sun, Aug 15, 2010

breakfastclubNeed something to do for brunch today? I suggest you head to Allston...yeah yeah I know, it's a bit out there, but this little diner, you are guaranteed something amazing!!

Here is what one Yelper had to say about it:

"As diners go, this place is the best.  They are always crowded on Saturday and Sunday morning.   They have really fast service and cheap prices.   The wait moves very fast, so don't worry about that..  I always get an omelet and my girlfriend swears by the breakfast sandwiches.  As others have said, the 80's posters and music give the place a great charm.  Good breakfast spot for sure.

Note:  don't be fooled by the ATM in the lobby, they take credit cards.   Rookie mistake."

Check out Yelp for more information.

#108 Coolidge Corner Theater

Posted by Tara Peterson on Wed, Aug 11, 2010

coolidgecornerIf you haven't been to the Coolidge Corner Theater, we suggest you check it out. The theater plays independent films but they also play a plethora of classic films.

The building has been around since the early 1900's and was made into a movie house in the 1933.

"Upon acquisition by Justin Freed in 1977, the Coolidge became a showcase for "art" pictures and catered to contemporary tastes for foreign and independent films. As suburbs beyond Brookline boomed and movie audiences flocked to suburban multiplex cinemas, Freed converted the balcony section into another theater to attract more patrons. Finding it difficult to compete with the multiplexes and with video rentals, Freed eventually chose to sell the theater, and it was threatened with demolition and conversion of the property into a mall." To get more history on this awesome theater click here

Here are some up-coming classics coming to the theater. To see newbies being played visit their site.

Super Troopers (we suggest chugging a bottle of syrup before hand. haha)
August 13-14th playing at midnight

THE BIG LEBOWSKI: DUDE!!! A Coen Brothers classic. August 16th at 7pm
Sure, just bringing this lovably oddball slacker classic back to the BIG screen is cool enough on its own. But that's not all! We're throwing our sixth annual pre-show bowling party extravaganza celebrating the greatness of his dudeness and his laid back misadventures. Here's your chance to compete for sweet Lebowski-themed prizes in tests of wit and skill including, but not limited to:

• best costume (break out those bowling shirts, bathrobes, and skintight purple Jesus lounge suits!)

• most convincing nihilist quip

• most impassioned Walter rant

• and of course: bowling.

The Princess Bride is also playing August 23. That's inconcievable! At 7pm

#106 Jules Aarons Collection at the Boston Public Library

Posted by Tara Peterson on Mon, Aug 09, 2010

julesaaronsHaving gone to this collection a few weeks ago, it was really quite amazing to see Boston life during the late 40s to the mid 70s. (Although I think the focus of this collection is geared more in the late 40s to mid 50s...correct me if I am wrong) I almost wondered if much had changed when regarding the neighborhoods. Go see for yourself! There are some really fascinating images!

“Man in the Street: Jules Aarons Photographs Boston, 1947-1976,’’

This is the last week for it, so if you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you do!! The collection is at the Boston Public Library.
