The Lingo

Boston has its own dialect! Found in many of its neighborhoods and throughout other parts of New England, the two features of the Boston accent are non-rhoticity and broad A. You have probably heard the expression that sums it up well, “go pahk your cahs in Hahvuhd Yahd.” Boston University created a little guide to help you out. Wicked good.

Back Bay Streets

They are in alphabetical order. Arlington, Berkeley, Clarendon, Dartmouth, and so on. Makes it easy to get around if you think about the system. The closer to the Common, the earlier in the alphabet. Also makes it super easy to visit a Sunday Open House 🙂

Hancock Building

Tells you the weather (who needs a smart phone for that?) Simply remember this clever poem, and you are good to go:

“Solid blue, clear view,” “Flashing blue, clouds due,” “Solid red, rain ahead,” and “Flashing red, snow instead” (during the summer, flashing red means the Red Sox game is rained out).
