I was sitting at the breakfast table one morning and started to hear this whistling noise. Some days it can be very windy in Boston and if your windows aren’t sealed right they can be quite a nuisance. It can get even worse the higher up in the loft apartments you are. Once your windows start whistling, they might even begin to leak water inside and even worse, your controlled climate can seep out. There are a number of things that can lead to these problems.

  • Window Sashes
  • Window Panes
  • Balancing Rods

Window sashes are more than likely the cause of most leaks. This is one of the most common problems of whistling. They can be fixed with either weather stripping or just adjustment of the casing.

The window panes can also be one of the causes. This will usually need to be re-glazed. You must remove all of the old caulk or sealant and reapply new caulk to the seams. You can do that yourself, but it is always better to leave it to a professional so that you can be sure the job is done right.

When the windows are difficult to slide up and down, it might be a problem with the balancing rods. The balancing rods are what help lift the window up and keep them from slamming down. Adjustments can be made, but sometimes like all springs they can get worn out.
