5 Ways to Make your New Apartment Seem Bigger

People that have made the conscious decision to move from a larger space to a smaller space have the challenge of not only storing everything they need and want to keep, but also decorating the space so it does not look overly cramped. If you have just moved into an apartment that is on the small side there are a few things that you can do to give the illusion that the space is larger than it is in reality.

Brighten up the Space

One of the best ways to open up a space is to lighten up the room. If you have a room where all of the walls and even the flooring are dark colors it can make the room feel smaller. By opting to paint the walls in lighter colors, the room will gain some size. If you are unable to change the flooring because the property owner will not permit it, or it is too expensive, consider using area rugs. They not only serve to brighten up dark flooring but they also can serve as a means to define different spaces. Additionally, eliminating dark or bulky window coverings can help a room feel more spacious me letting in more natural light.

Incorporate Hidden Storage/Multipurpose Items

One issue with smaller spaces is lack of storage. Interior design experts Boscolo suggest that you tackle this issue by purchase furniture pieces that not only act as a standard piece of furniture but also have multiple uses. There are coffee tables on the market that serve as storage, Range of Bar Stools which can be used on multiple occasions in different ways and one section of the table that doubles as a desk simply by raising it up. Ottomans are another furniture piece that works as a seat, a makeshift coffee table, and some even provide hidden storage.

Glass, Lucite, and Mirrors

Another way to make a room feel more open is to purchase furniture that is made of glass or Lucite. These do not weigh down a space by using dark colors. Being able to see through items like a desk, dining tables, and similar helps keeps the space looking open. Mirrors are another way to open up a room. Strategically placing them across from windows brings in more light and gives the illusion that the room is larger. You can also get new blinds in Perth, to help close out the light on hot days. Placing mirrors behind darker pieces of furniture gives the impression there is space behind it making the room look larger.

Say Goodbye to Clutter

One of the fastest ways to make a room look cramped is excessive clutter. Although you may love collecting a variety of Knick-knacks, they will make your room look smaller. Try picking a few select pieces that are no smaller than a cantaloupe. This allows you to add your personal touch to your space without making it appear cramped, so it’s time to declutter.

Use Vertical Space

A fun and creative trick to keep things off the floor all while keeping the room feeling open is by utilizing vertical space. Use the walls in your apartment for storage. You can put shelves up high on the wall for storage of books and those must have knickknacks, you can store jewelry, bikes, and other things on the wall as well. Get creative with storing things on the wall and you will keep the space open all while creating unique decorative displays.

By using a little imagination, lighter colors, mirrors, and letting natural light in you can make a small apartment look bigger.
